Q: Another question that I want to ask you is about the special tools I need to extract the CVJ and especially the strange key with the three pins to unscrew the hub nut of the wheel. I have problem with the bearings for the front left wheel and with the handbrake shoes of the rear wheels. So first of all I have to unscrew the hub nuts of the wheels. I am an amateur to these procedures and because here in Corfu the Lancia Garage does not have the proper old tools to do that , I decide to make these tools from pure steel. I have problems giving to the machine-man ,who will make these tools for me , the exact dimensions because the already fitted hub nuits to all wheels are destroyed by the previous owner with hammer. So I cannot measure the exact positions of the pins. I contacted Omicron Engineering but unfortunately they didn’t have these tools to sell me but in their try to help me they send me a tool for the front wheels from someone customer of them , without charging me , but without guarantee for it. Of course this tool was very weak and destroyed after my first try to unscrew the hub nut but I had already imprinted the dimensions of the pins. So I gave these dimensions to the machine-shop to make a very strong tool for me . After all the only question that I am asking you is if you know the dimensions of the tool for the rear hub nut. If you have time to waste please e-mail me these or if you know write me a way to purchase all these special tools that I need for my car.

A: To work on the hubs of your Fulvia (1.3 series 2 or 3) you need as a minimum 4 special tools:

  • One with three pins to remove the front driveshaft nut.
  • One with 6 slots to remove the bearing nut at the front.
  • One with 3 pins to remove the rear drum to access the hand brake shoes and finally
  • One with 6 slots to remove the rear wheel bearing. All these tools were sold by various companies in Italy but now they are obsolete items and thus not currently available from stock.

If tools cannot be purchased they can be made professionally by a proper tool maker. Tools must be VERY strong (heat hardened) because the torque of the nuts they have to remove is VERY high. I can trace on a piece of paper the shape of these tools for you so that you can have them made. It seems to me that the first job for you is to find a good tool maker (perhaps on mainland Greece?) who knows how to manufacture strong, professional tools. Once you find a suitable shop you can send me 3 international reply coupons and I will send you by post the paper outline of the tools so that you have the right size for your car.
