Remove these. Inside the crankshaft you will find a lot of dirt. Clean all of this out. Failure to do so could mean dirt getting through the lubrication holes and scoring either bearings or crankshaft (or both)

A: In my experience the amount of sludge is often really amazing but it might reflect infrequent oil changes.
